The Question of Abundance

The word ‘Abundance’ is something that is often thrown around in ‘new age’ circles. But what does that really mean? Well it depends on what definition you use. Some, like myself, believe it is ‘plenty’, that there is enough for everyone. But some dictionaries define it as ‘an extremely plentiful or oversufficient quantity or supply’ (dictionary.com). Which I believe is what most people are thinking when they wish for abundance.

However ‘over-sufficient’ creates imbalance and if we are talking about a healthy lifestyle then too much of anything, whether it is sugar, money or sleep, is not healthy.  In a healthy system we are always striving for balance. So perhaps instead of ‘abundance’ we should strive for ‘sufficience’, enough, plenty but not too much.

Perhaps then it is time to ground ourselves in other mediums that are real such as gold or objects and activities that hold value such as food and care giving.

The story below is one real life example of a woman who has been living a life of self-sufficiency for the last 15 years. Hopefully this will inspire us to know if can be done and seek greater balance in our own lives.

Heidemarie Schwermer, a 69-year-old woman from Germany, gave up using money 15 years ago and says she’s been much happier ever since.’
